UW Takes Six-Game Win Streak To Cal Poly
March 6, 2012
THIS WEEKEND: The Washington baseball team (9-3) are riding a six-game winning streak into the final weekend before Pac-12 Conference play begins as the Huskies travel to San Luis Obispo to face Cal Poly (9-3) in a three-game series this weekend. First pitch on Friday and Saturday is 6:00 p.m. and Sunday's series finale begins at 1:00 p.m. Fans can follow live stats and listen to Cal Poly's audio broadcast via links at gohuskies.com. The easiest way to find the links is to go to the baseball schedule page at gohuskies.com and click on that day's game for the links. Junior righty Aaron West will start for the UW on Friday. On Saturday, junior RHP George Asmus gets the ball and sophomore right-hander Austin Voth starts on Sunday. UW enters the series after a four-game sweep of Saint Joseph's in which the Huskies gave up just one earned run (and only two runs total) over the four games. Prior to that, the UW won two of three at UC Irvine and a game at Cal State Northridge. After the series at Cal Poly, the UW hosts Portland next Tuesday before opening Pac-12 play with a three-game series vs. Oregon at Husky Ballpark March 16-18. Here's a look at this weekend's games:
Fri., March 9: UW at Cal Poly, 6 p.m. PT - live stats & audio via gohuskies.com
COACH MEGGS: Lindsay Meggs is in his third season as head coach at Washington. This spring, one of his chief accomplishments has come to fruition with the opening of the new baseball team building at Husky Ballpark - a clubhouse, coaches' offices, training room, equipment room and donor area overlooking the field. Meggs came to the UW after having spent the previous three seasons at Indiana State and the 13 prior to that at Chico State, where he won NCAA Division II national championships in 1997 and 1999. He helped Chico to the D-II College World Series seven times and won the league eight times. At Indiana State, he was named Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding the Sycamores to a second-place finish, their highest since 1998. Currently, he boasts a 669-375-4 record over 18 seasons as a four-year college head coach. He'd previously served as head coach at Long Beach City College and Oxnard College. Born in San Jose and a graduate of Saratoga (Calif.) High, Meggs played four seasons as the starting third baseman at UCLA. He was drafted by the Brewers in 1983, and then again by the Royals after his senior year in 1984. Meggs is joined by assistant coaches Dave Nakama, Dave Dangler and Jordon Twohig.
SERIES HISTORY: Cal Poly holds an 11-5 advantage in its all-time series with Washington. The two teams last met in Seattle in 2008, when the Mustangs won two out of three. Cal Poly swept a three-game set the year before in San Luis Obispo. In 2006, the Mustangs won two of three in a series in Seattle while Washington won two of three in SLO in 2005. In 1995, the UW opened its season in SLO, winning one of three.
SQUAD BREAKDOWN: Among the 35 players on the 2012 Husky roster, there are two seniors, 12 juniors, 10 sophomores and 11 true freshmen. The squad includes 15 returners and 20 newcomers (11 true freshmen, three sophomore transfers and six junior transfers). Entering the 2012 season, the UW's returning players had competed in a total of 695 Husky baseball games. Eight different veteran position players had combined for 1,707 career at bats. Six veteran UW pitchers had combined to make 44 career starts and had pitched 420.2 career innings in a Husky uniform.
ANOTHER TOUGH SCHEDULE: Each year, Washington boasts one of the toughest schedules in the season, if only by virtue of playing the rigorous Pac-12 Conference. According to well-regarded college baseball website, boydsworld.com, the Huskies have the ninth-toughest schedule in the country, though most of the Pac-12's team rank highly. The Huskies, of course, face the 10 other Pac-12 teams. Six Pac-12 teams (Arizona, ASU, Cal, OSU, Stanford, UCLA) were ranked in either the Baseball America and USA Today coaches' preseason polls, or both. Oregon and USC also each also received votes in the coaches' poll. Additionally, the Huskies traveled to UC Irvine for a three-game series. The Anteaters were ranked No. 26 by the coaches.
THEY'RE COMING FROM ALL OVER: The 2012 Husky baseball roster includes players from seven different states. Of the 35 players on the official roster entering the season, 18 are from Washington, 11 are from California, two are from Idaho and there is one player each from Arizona, Colorado, Hawai'i and Indiana. Washington's baseball roster has traditionally been heavily dominated by in-state players. Of the 18 players from the Evergreen State, 17 come from west of the Cascade Mountains, (the western half of the state).
