Stefonick HR Lifts Baseball to Win
February 12, 1999
ST. GEORGE, Utah - Senior Nick Stefonick blasted a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead No. 21 Washington to a 16-13 win over Southern Utah Friday at the Dixie Tournament.
The Huskies (2-0) lost a 10-8 lead in the eighth and saw the Thunderbirds (5-12) break a 10-10 tie in the top of the ninth when Phil Downing belted a three-run homer with two outs.
Washington scored six runs in the bottom of the inning. An error by SU shortstop Luke Geddes, on a probable game-ending double play, kept the rally alive and allowed the first run to score. After Marc Rittenhouses bad hop single scored two more to tie it, Stefonick blasted his homer. After having gone 0- for-4 prior to the home run, Stefonick, a junior from Seattles ODea High, kept alive his 18-game hitting streak, dating back to 1998.
Washington tied the game at 10-10 in the eighth inning on another error by Geddes. The game would have ended had the Huskies not tied it due to a tournament time-limit rule.
Junior catcher Dominic Woody hit two home runs, a double and drove in five runs for the Huskies. Ticen had two hits and two RBI in the game and reliever Ken Ferguson earned the win. SU reliever Zac Barnard, who relieved starter Nick Roberts to begin the ninth, took the loss.
Amos Bright scored three runs and had three singles for the Thunderbirds, who led four different times in the game.
The Huskies close out the season-opening weekend Saturday against Brigham Young.
