Huskies Open Practice; Start 2012 Season In 3 Weeks

SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team took the field at Husky Ballpark this afternoon for the first official full-squad practice of the spring.
The Huskies, under third-year head coach Lindsay Meggs, open the season just three weeks from today with the first game of a three-game series at San Diego State. The Huskies' home opener is the following Tuesday, Feb. 21, vs. Seattle University.
Washington's 35-man roster features a solid mix of veterans and a good number of newcomers.
The top four offensive players from last year in terms of batting average -- left fielder Joe Meggs, third baseman Jacob Lamb and catchers Ryan Wiggins and B.K. Santy -- all return. Six offensive starters in total return.
On the mound, six of Washington's top pitchers in terms of their 2011 earned run averages are back as are six of the eight most-used pitchers.
Additionally, the roster includes 20 newcomers, including 11 true freshmen and nine junior college transfers.
