Grove grand slam highlights nine-run ninth. May 21, 1999 SEATTLE - Washington State right fielder Jason Grove belted a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning to overcome a 7-4 deficit and lead the Cougars to an 13-7 win over Washington Friday night in a non-conference game at Husky Ballpark. After the grand slam, the Cougars went on to score five more runs in the ninth inning, for a total of nine in the frame, to add insurance. Grove drove in five runs in the ninth. The Huskies had broken a 4-4 tie with three runs in the eighth, but UW reliever Matt Massingale walked the first two Cougars in the ninth before being relieved by Matt Hampton. Hampton walked a third runner before Grove belted his 17th home run of the season over the left-center field fence. Washington fell to 33-22 with the loss while Washington State improved to 23-31. Reliever Justin Nakaishi (1-1) earned the win for the Cougars while Hampton (0-3) suffered the loss. UW junior Dominic Woody belted his 18th home run of the season in the third inning, giving Washington a 3-0 lead at the time. The Huskies and Cougars close out the regular season Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
