Baseball Scores Five in 7th to Beat USC
May 15, 1999 LOS ANGELES - The Washington baseball team exploded for five runs in the seventh inning and hung on to beat No. 16 USC, 8-7, Saturday at Dedeaux Field. The win assured the Huskies (32-20 overall, 12-11 Pac-10) of at least a .500 mark in conference. USC fell to 32-23, 16-7), losing its 10th one-run game of the year. Husky sophomore Jeff Carlsen (8-1) picked up the win despite allowing seven runs on nine hits. Freshman Taylor Grant worked the final two innings for his third save. USCs Justin Lehr (6-2) worked six and one-third innings in the loss. Washington took a 3-0 lead with a run in the second and two in the third, but USC came back to score four runs in the third to take a 4-3 lead. Trojan center fielder Brad Ticehurst highlighted the third with a long solo home run, his eighth. In the seventh, after USC starter Justin Lehr had held the Huskies hitless over the previous three innings, Wasington came up with five hits and scored five runs to take an 8-5 lead. Bryan Williamson and Pete Orgill each had two-RBI hits in the inning. USC drew closer in the bottom of the seventh when DH Carlos Casillas followed a Ticehurst single with a home run, cutting the Washington lead to 8-7. In the eighth, the Trojans had runners at first and third with one out. Ticehurst lined a ball to second base that a leaping Brent Robertson had hit off of his glove. But the UW freshman had time to pick the ball up and start an inning-ending double play to maintain the one-run lead. Williamson, Orgill and Dominic Woody each finished the game with two RBI. Casillas led the Trojans with 2-for-3 hitting and two RBI. The Huskies and USC play their final Pac-10 game of the year and the last of the three- game series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The game will air live on KSRB AM-1150.
