Huskies Lose to Gonzaga, 7-2

May 12, 1999

SEATTLE - Gonzaga held Washington to only four hits and beat the Huskies, 7-2, in a non-conference game Wednesday night at Husky Ballpark.

Reliever Matt Siwek (6-4) worked four one-third innings for the Bulldogs, who improved to 25-21-2. The junior from Port Orchard retired 13 of the 14 batters he faced, giving up only a single and fanning five for the win. Washington fell to 31-19 on the season.

In the fourth, Bulldog DH Barry Matthews broke a scoreless tie when he belted his 10th home run of the year, a solo blast, over the right-field fence to give Gonzaga a 1-0 lead. Husky senior Kevin Ticen answered in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer, his 14th, to tie the game at 1-1.

Washington took the lead in the fifth, scoring run when Gonzaga starter Tucker Urdahl walked the bases loaded and then walked Ed Erickson to force in freshman Ben Miller with the go-ahead run.

In the seventh, with UW freshman reliever Shawn Kohn in to pitch, pinch hitter Jared Hertz hit a solo home run to right to tie the game at 2-2. Kohn then walked two batters before being relieved by Ken Ferguson, who hit a batter with a pitch and then issued a walk to Jason Bay to force home a run to give the Zags a 3-2 lead.

With the bases still loaded the in seventh, Ferguson seemingly got out of the jam when Adam Stokey popped up to shallow left, but left fielder Todd Linden lost the ball in the lights and the ball dropped for a three-RBI double to gave Gonzaga a 6-2 lead.

UW senior starter Matt Hampton worked six two-hit innings, allowing only one run and striking out five, but go no decision. Kohn took the loss to fall to 2-1 on the year.

This Friday through Sunday, the Huskies travel to Los Angeles to play USC in the final Pac-10 series of the season. The fourth-place Huskies could come out of the weekend as high as third place or as low as sixth. All three games will air live on KSRB AM-1150.
