Baseball Falls to Arizona State, 13-8

May 8, 1999

SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team fell into a three-way tie for fourth place in the Pac-10 Conference Saturday, losing 13-8 to Arizona State at Husky Ballpark.

The Sun Devils finished the weekend with a 2-1 series win to improve to 38-19 on the season and 11- 10 in the Pac-10. Washington dropped to 30-18, 11-10. ASU and UW are tied with Arizona for fourth, a half game behind UCLA (27-27, 11-9), which beat Oregon State, 15-0, Saturday. The Beavers and Bruins close out a three-game series Sunday in Los Angeles.

ASU reliever Chad Pennington (7-5) worked five and one-third innings for the win. The sophomore righthander allowed only one run on five hits while striking out seven. The game was close for most of the time Pennington was in, but the Sun Devils got a pair of two-run homers in the ninth from Mark Ernster and Willie Bloomquist to increase their 9-8 lead to 13-8.

Arizona State broke a 7-7 tie in the fifth when Ernster and Bloomquist each drove in a run off of UW reliever Matt Hampton (0-2), who took the loss. Husky freshman Shawn Kohn kept it close, throwing three and two-thirds of shutout relief before giving up Ernster's homer in the ninth.

Washington took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, thanks largely to consecutive doubles from Bryan Williamson, Dominic Woody and Ed Erickson. ASU's Brendan Hines hit a solo homer in the second, his third of the series, for ASU's first run, and six runs in the fourth gave the Devils a 7-4 edge.

In the bottom of the fourth, Husky senior Kevin Ticen singled home two runs and scored on a Williamson single to tie the game at 7-7.

Bloomquist finished the day 3-for-6 with four RBI and Andrew Beinbrink added three hits to pace the ASU offense. Williamson and Woody each had three hits and two RBI for Washington.

The Huskies play a pair of non-conference games this Tuesday and Wednesday against Gonzaga at Husky Ballpark before travelling to play second-place USC in the final Pac-10 weekend of the year this Friday through Sunday. PLEASE NOTE: Monday's game vs. Gonzaga has been cancelled.
