Huskies Fall to Portland, 10-6
May 5, 1999 SEATTLE - Down 5-0 after three innings, Portland rallied to beat Washington, 10-6, in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday night at Husky Ballpark. UW junior Dominic Woody hit his 16th home run of the season, a solo shot to center in the seventh, to tie the schools single-season record, held by Mike Blowers (1986) and Ryan Lentz (1998). The Huskies fell to 29-16 on the season while Portland improved to 21-23. Pilots starter Tony Blackhurst worked seven innings for the win while Josh Cram earned his first save. UW reliever Kurt Lehrmann (0-1) suffered the loss. UW freshman Zack Daniels made his first career start, but got no decision despite leaving with a 5-0 lead in the fifth. The Charles Wright Academy product worked five shutout innings, allowing three hits. The Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the first, thanks to sacrifice flies from Woody and Ed Erickson. In the second, freshman Matt Hollod tripled home a pair of runs, and in the third, Jake Gann singled home Woody to make it 5-0. In the sixth, Portland rallied for three runs off of UW reliever Matt Garnder, who was making his first appearance in nearly a month due to injury. A bases-loaded walk and a two-run single from Matt Allen accounted for the runs. With a man on in the seventh, Pilots first baseman Steve Jackson belted his seventh home run to make it 5-5. Still in the seventh, after a pair of walks, Portland DH Jeff Trevarthen singled home two more and then scored on a double by Allen to give the Pilots an 8-5 lead. The Huskies return to Pac-10 action Thursday when they play host to 24th-ranked Arizona State in the first of a three-game series. Game time is 6:30 p.m. and the game will air on KSRB AM-1150.
