SEATTLE - Greg Isaacson and Jay Garthwaite each hit three-run home runs during a seven-run fifth inning as the Washington baseball team handed UCLA a 9-5 loss Sunday at Husky Ballpark. With the victory, the Huskies won the weekend series, two games to one, and moved one game behind first-place USC. The UW travels to face the Trojans next weekend.

Sophomore Clay Johnson (Elma) threw a complete game to improve his record to 2-1 on the season. The right-hander gave up 11 hits and four earned runs, but walked only one and struck out eight. Washington, which has won three straight Pac-10 weekend series and nine of its last 12 overall, improved to 22-20-1 on the season and 10-5 in Pac-10 play. USC, which was idle this weekend, has an 11-4 league mark.

UCLA's Doug Silva, who was making only his second start of the season, suffered the loss despite not surrendering either of the Huskies' homers. Silva was relieved with runners at first and third and no outs in the fifth inning. Dan Reid came on to face Isaacson, a sophomore from Aberdeen, who belted his first career home run over the right-field wall and into Lake Washington, giving the UW a 5-1 lead.

After Isaacson's homer, reliever Wade Clark walked two batters and gave up an RBI double to Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) before the Bruins' fourth pitcher of the inning, Kyle Wilson, came in. After getting a groundout, Wilson gave up the shot to Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian), his 11th of the year.

The Bruins (21-28 overall, 6-9 Pac-10) got two home runs from catcher Josh Arhart, his sixth and seventh of the season, and another from Brandon Averill in the ninth. However, Arhart's first came with no runners on, as did Averill's. Arhart finished 2-for-4 with three RBI while Ryan McCarthy and Casey Grzecka each added two hits for the visitors.

Isaacson, a walk-on second baseman, went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in while Garthwaite, who also had a sacrifice fly in the fourth, also collected four RBI while going 1-for-3. Davidson and freshman right fielder Taylor Johnson (Vancouver/Skyview) each had two hits.

The Huskies take on Portland Tuesday and Wednesday at Husky Ballpark before travelling to Los Angeles to face USC Friday through Sunday. Tuesday's Portland game, as well as all three from L.A., will air live on the radio on KKNW AM-1150.
