Cougars Beat Huskies, 14-13, in 10 Innings
May 2, 1999 PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State catcher Jeff Scherers 10th-inning single drove home Dusty Edler with the winning run as the Cougars beat Washington, 14-13, in a rain- soaked, four and a half our marathon at Bailey Field. Scherers hit dropped by out-stretched glove of UW center fielder Tyson Boston, who was nearing the wall in his run to make the catch. Just before the hit, UW reliever Ken Ferugson had coaxed a bases-loaded, no-out double play Steve Curran to nearly get out of the jam. Ferugson (2-3) suffered the loss. The Huskies, still in third place in the Pac-10 despite losing two of three to the Cougars, dropped to 10-8 in the conference and 28-15 overall. WSU moved into an eight-place tie while upping their record to 20-25 overall and 3-15 in the Pac-10. Washington third baseman Kevin Ticen went 5-for-6 with two home runs and four RBI on the day. UW catcher Dominic Woody hit his 15th home run and also doubled while right fielder Bryan Williamson went 3-for-6 with two doubles. WSU right fielder Jason Grove led the Cougar offense with three hits, including a second- inning grand slam, and five RBI. Reliever Matt OBrien, who gave up a leadoff double in the top of the 10th but didnt allow the runner to score, picked up the win to go to 6-4.. The Huskies return to Seattle for their next seven games. Tuesday and Wednesday nights, the UW takes on Portland. Thursday through Saturday, Arizona State comes to Husky Ballpark for a three-game Pac-10 series.
