April 23, 1999

Box Score

SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team extended its winning streak to seven games Friday night with a 10-7 win over Oregon State in a Pac-10 Conference game at Husky Ballpark.

The third-place Huskies improved to 26-12 overall and 8-5 in the Pac-10. Eight-place OSU dropped to 14-29, 2-11.

Despite allowing the more earned runs he has surrendered in a game all year, Husky sophomore Jeff Carlsen (7-0) kept his record perfect with the victory. The 6-foot-7 righthander gave up the five runs on seven hits in five innings. OSU starter Mark Newell (3-6) yielded eight earned runs on 13 hits to take the loss.

Oregon State rallied in the eighth, scoring two runs. The Beavers then had the tying runs on second and third base with one out before UW freshmen relievers Shawn Kohn and Taylor Grant struck out Corrie Willkie and Joe Gerber, respectively, to end the inning. Matt Massingale worked the ninth for his Pac-10-leading seventh save.

The Huskies trailed 2-1 before scoring five runs in the third. The big blow of the inning was a two-run double from Bryan Williamson. Catcher Dominic Woody also hit one of his two doubles to score a run in the inning.

Williamson finished the day 4-for-5 with a homer, a double and three RBI. Senior DH Pete Orgill tallied a double, a solo homer and an RBI in three at bats.

Senior shortstop Troy Schader led the Beaver attack with two doubles, a home run and three runs scored in four at bats.

The Huskies and Beavers continue the three-game series Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
