Baseball Holds on to Beat Beavers
April 14, 1999 CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Washington baseball team, which led by 14 runs at one pont, held off a rally and held on to beat Oregon State, 17-16, Wednesday at Goss Stadium to complete a sweep of a two-game non-conference series. The Huskies improved to 21-12 with the victory while OSU fell to 12-26. Oregon State, which trailed 17-3 in the game going into the seventh, has now lost 16 of its last 19 games. Heaverlo, a junior from Ephrata, Wash., improved his season record to 7-1 with the victory. The right-hander worked six innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits. He didnt walk a batter and struck out four. OSU starter Pat Versluis (1-6) threw five innings in the loss, allowing six earned runs. After Heaverlo was relieved, the OSU bats woke up against the UW relief corps. In the ninth, Joe Gerbers three-run homer brought the Beavers to within one run, but Curtis Davis fanned to end the game. Shortstop Marc Rittenhouse, third baseman Kevin Ticen and right fielder/pitcher Daniel Jahn each hit two-run homers for the Huskies. Jahn, who also pitched the ninth inning, narrowly missed hitting a grand slam in the sixth when his drive to right hit the very top of the fence and bounced back in for a two-run double. Jahn finished the day 5-for-6 with three runs and four RBI. He also pitched the ninth inning. Every Husky starter got a hit in the game. Six different Huskies had two or more runs batted in and eight UW batters had mulitple hits. Gerber went 5-for-6 for OSU. The Huskies return to Husky Ballpark this weekend for a three-game, none-conference series against Cal State Northridge. Fridays series opener begins at 6:30 p.m. and both Saturday and Sundays games are 1:00 p.m. starts.
