SPOKANE, Wash. - A fifth-inning grand slam from Gonzaga first baseman Ryan Wiegand proved to be the difference as the Bulldogs beat the Washington baseball team, 7-3, Monday night in a non-conference game at Patterson Baseball Complex.

Wiegand's homer came with two outs in the fifth of of UW starter Adrian Gomez (1-3), who suffered the loss.

Gonzaga improved to 21-8 on the season while the Huskies dropped their sixth in a row to fall to 10-19.

Gonzaga broke through for the game's first run in the bottom of the third as Drew Heid fouled off several 2-2 pitches before driving a two-out RBI single to center, scoring Ernesto Ortiz to make it 1-0.

The Huskies, who had runners aboard in each of the first four innings, had to wait until the fifth to score. After a walk to Jake Rife, Kyle Conley hit his league-leading 11th home run of the season out to left-center field, putting the Huskies in front, 2-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Gonzaga went back in front. After back-to-back singles to open the inning, a sacrifice bunt and a lineout made it two outs with runners at second and third. After an intentional walk, Wiegand belted a grand slam deep to right, giving the Bulldogs a 5-2 lead.

Washington got one back in the sixth when Brett Wilcox was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a double-play groundout. But Gonzaga made it 6-3 on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning and then added a seventh run in the eighth inning.

The Huskies brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, loading the bases on two walks and a single, but Cody Martin struck out Brett Wilcox to end it.

The two-game series with Gonzaga concludes Tuesday with a 12 noon game that will air live on the Dawg Channel at gohuskies.com. Thursday through Saturday, California comes to Seattle for a three-game Pac-10 series.
