Box Score

SEATTLE - No. 3 Arizona State, behind a 14-strikout performance, from starter Josh Spence, handed the Washington baseball team a 12-1 loss Saturday at Husky Ballpark.

The Sun Devils (22-5 overall, 7-1 in the Pac-10) took a two-games-to-none lead in the three-game series. Washington fell to 10-17 overall and 1-4 in the Pac-10.

Spence improved to 6-0 on the season with the victory. He worked eight innings, allowing one unearned run on eight hits while walking two and fanning 14.

UW sophomore starter Ben Guidos (1-2) worked three and one-third innings in the loss, allowing five runs on six hits.

The Huskies had a great chance in the first, loading the bases with no outs, but Spence struck out the next three to get off the hook unscathed.

In the top of the second, the Devils went in front when catcher Carlos Ramirez led off with his league-leading 10th homer of the season. Later in the second, with two out and two on, Drew Maggi singled home a run to give ASU a 2-0 lead.

In the third, Jason Kipnis singled, took second on a bunt, stole third and then scored on a groundout from Ramirez, making it a 3-0 game.

Washington got on the board in the bottom of the third. With runners at first and second with one out, Aaron Russell hit a ground ball to short. After getting an out at second, the throw on to first got past the first baseman, allowing Kyle Conley to score, cutting the lead to 3-1.

But, ASU second baseman Zach MacPhee, whose error led to the Husky run, atoned in the fourth when he belted a two-run homer to left to stretch the lead to 5-1. In the sixth, RBI singles from Maggi and Riccio Torrez scored two more to make it 7-1.

ASU added five more in the ninth to put the game away.

The Huskies and Devils conclude the series Sunday at 12:00 p.m. The game will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
