Baseball Rallies to Beat California, 10-8
March 22, 1999 BERKELEY, Calif. - The Washington baseball team overcame an early seven-run deficit and scored five runs in the ninth inning to beat California, 10-8, Monday in a Pac-10 Conference game at Evans Diamond. The Husky win salvaged a series split after Cal won the first two games of the series. Washington improved to 12-6 on the year and 1-2 in the Pac-10. Cal fell to 12-18, 2-1. Down 8-5 heading into the ninth, the Huskies tied the game on a three-run home run by Nick Stefonick, his second of the day. Cal reliever Jason Dennis then intentionally walked UW slugger Dominic Woody to put the go-ahead run aboard with one out. Ed Ericksons double into the gap scored Woody all the way from first base to give the Huskies a lead. Erickson scored on a Kevin Ticen single to make it 10-8. Washington, which had struggled to score in the first two games of the series, posted a run in the top of the first Monday. Marc Rittenhouse led off the game with a single and eventually scored on a Dominic Woody single. Cal tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Mike Tonis. In the second, Cal second baseman Clint Hoover belted a two-run homer, his fourth of the year, to give the Bears a 3-1 edge. In the third, after an error had led to two more Cal runs, Hoover belted a three-run blast to increase the Bears lead to 8-1. Washington began to close the gap in the fourth when Woody led off with his 12th home run of the 18- game season. In the sixth, Stefonicks two-run home run chased Cal starter Trevor Hutchinson. Washington scored a fifth run later in the sixth, but left the bases loaded with the score, 8-5. The Huskies return to Seattle this week for a six-game homestand. Wednesday and Thursday, the UW plays host to Wichita State in a pair of 6:30 p.m. games. Saturday through Monday, the Huskies take on UCLA in a three-game Pac-10 series. The homestand concludes next Tuesday against Lewis-Clark State in a 6:30 p.m. game.
