March 22, 1999

Box Score

BERKELEY, Calif. - First baseman Jason Dennis blasted a solo home run in the 10th inning to lead the California baseball team to a 6-5 win over Washington in a Pac-10 Conference game at Evans Diamond.

The Huskies, who were shut out 10-0 in the first game of the series on Saturday, fell to 11- 6 overall and 0-2 in the Pac-10. Cal improved to 12-17, 2-0.

Dennis' homer capped a Cal comeback that saw the Bears scored two in the eighth and one in the ninth. The ninth-inning homer came from All-American Xavier Nady, who blasted a pitch from Husky closer Matt Massingale over the left field fence with two out. Massingale (0-1) took the loss after reliever starter Jeff Carlsen to begin the eighth. Cal reliever Jason Ball (3-0) earned the victory.

Washington had come back from a 2-0 deficit thanks to two home runs from catcher Dominic Woody.

The Bears scored an unearned run in the top of the first when leadoff man Preston Sharp walked, moved to second on an errant pickoff throw from Woody and eventually scored on a Xavier Nady sacrifice fly. Cal made the score 2-0 in the second when Jason Dennis doubled and eventually scored on a sac fly by designated hitter David Sark.

Washington finally broke out for a run in the seventh when Woody led off the inning with his 10th home run of the year. Later in the inning, with two runners on and one out, Dennis, who moved from first base to relieve, fanned pinch hitter Matt Hollod and another reliever, David Cash, fanned Marc Rittenhouse.

Woody's second home run, and 11th of the year, came in the eighth inning with Ed Erickson aboard at first base to give the UW a 3-2 edge, the first Husky lead of the series. Later in the eighth, with a runner on first, senior third baseman Kevin Ticen blasted his sixth home run of the season to make the score 5-2.

The Huskies and Bears close out the three-game series Monday at 2:00 p.m.
