March 21, 2010
SEATTLE - Despite allowing only one earned run, Husky starter Geoff Brown nonetheless took the loss as Cal State Fullerton used a five-run third inning to beat the Washington baseball team, 6-0, Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
Brown (0-1), a junior from Mill Creek making his second start of the year, gave up nine hits (eight singles), walked two and struck out three over five and one-third innings to take the loss.
Fullerton's Nick Merkins went eight-plus innings for the win, improving to 2-1 on the year. He allowed six hits, no walks and struck out seven as the Titans improved to 10-9 on the year.
After two quick, scoreless innings, Fullerton jumped out to a 5-0 lead with five runs in the third. After a single and an error on a sacrifice bunt, Christian Colon singled to drive in the first run before a sacrifice fly and three one-run singles (two of them infield singles) tacked on four more.
In the ninth, the Titans added another unearned run as Austin Kingsolver, who reached on a bunt single, advanced to second on an errant throw and stole third, came in to score on a groundout, making it 6-0.
Freshman Adam Cimber pitched two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief for the Huskies.
The Huskies take on cross-town rival Seattle University Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue. The game marks the first matchup between the two teams since 1986, the season after which Seattle U. dropped its program. Next Thursday through Saturday, Washington plays a series at Dallas Baptist.
