Baseball Beats Gonzaga in Home Opener
March 5, 1999 SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team, after starting the season with 11 straight road games, took advantage of the best Seattle weather in months and opened the home schedule Friday with an 8-4 win over Gonzaga at Husky Ballpark. The Huskies got two-run home runs from Bryan Williamson, Ed Erickson and Dominic Woody. Husky All-American Jeff Heaverlo improved to 3-0 with the victory, as the UW upped its season record to 8-4. Heaverlo fanned 11 batters and allowed eight hits in eight innings. Gonzaga starter Barry Matthews (1-1) struck out 10 batters in six innings, but gave up six runs. Gonzaga's Kevin Taylor put the Zags in front with a two-run homer in the first, but RBI doubles by Woody and Greg Brooks in the second inning tied it at 2-2. Williamson's homer in the third gave the Huskies a 4-2 lead before the Bulldogs tied it at 4-4 with two runs in the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, Erickson hit his sixth homer of the season to dead center field to score Williamson and give the Huskies a 6-2 lead that they'd never lose. Woody blasted his ninth homer in 12 games this season to score Williamson in the eighth and make it 8-4. UW senior Nick Stefonick, who had sat out the last six games after dislocating his left shoulder, returned to the lineup, but went 0-for-4 and had his 21-game hitting streak broken. Stefonick had been only one game short of tying Kevin Miller's 1997 school record of 22 games. Bo Hart had three hits to lead Gonzaga, which fell to 3-5 on the year. Taylor and Matthews, the starting pitcher who also batted, each had two hits. Saturday at 1:00 p.m., the Huskies play host to the National Baseball Institute of Canada in an exhibition game at Husky Ballpark.
