LAS VEGAS - After jumping out to a big lead and withstanding a comeback, the Washington baseball team pulled away to beat UNLV, 14-7, Saturday at the UNLV/Coors Desert Classic at Wilson Field.

As they've done much of the season, the Huskies (7-3) jumped out to an early lead. This time, the Dawgs scored runs in each of their first three innings to take an 8-0 advantage. Leadoff hitter Marc Rittenhouse provided much of the offense with two doubles, two runs, two RBI, a stolen base and a sacrifice fly over the first three innings.

Husky starter Matt Hampton was in control until the fifth inning. In that frame, he allowed four runs on four hits, two walks, a hit batter and three wild pitches before leaving the game with the bases loaded and two out. A fifth run came in on an infield single before freshman reliever Shawn Kohn got Denny Seybert to ground out to end the threat.

In the sixth, however, the Rebel rally continued when Chris Adolph and U.S. National Team star Ryan Ludwick led off with back-to-back triples. Ludwick scored on a ground out and the Husky lead was cut to 8-7. In the bottom of the sixth, Washington made it 11-7 with three runs, including two on a bases loaded single from sophomore designated hitter Daniel Jahn.

Kohn, a righthander from Woodinville, worked four and one-third innings for his first college win. The offense was led by Ed Erickson's three hits and three RBI and Kyle Woods added three hits, two runs and two stolen bases.

UNLV got four singles from first baseman Brian Hertel and three hits apiece from Ludwick and Adolph. Starter Toby Harris (0-3) allowed eight earned runs on 12 hits for the loss. UNLV fell to 4-12.

The Huskies wrap up the weekend Sunday against Creighton at 10 a.m.
