Box Score

SEATTLE - After splitting a pair of slugfests on Friday and Saturday, Washington and Fresno State hooked up in a low-scoring affair Sunday as the Bulldogs fended off a ninth-inning rally to nip the Huskies, 3-2, in the final game of a three-game series at Husky Ballpark.

Fresno State (5-2) won the series while the Huskies fell to 3-3 on the season. Washington won the opener, 10-9, before the Bulldogs took game two, 11-10.

The Huskies entered the ninth trailing 3-1 with four straight freshmen due up. After and out, Jacob Lamb singled and Chase Anselment doubled to put runners at second and third. A groundout from Andy Smith drove in one and moved pinch runner Andy Bethel to third, but Bradley Boyer grounded out sharply to end the game.

Washington sophomore Andrew Kittredge (1-1) pitched a solid eight innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out eight, but nonetheless suffered the loss.

Fresno State starter Josh Poytress (1-0) worked five and one-third innings, allowing one run on three hits with six Ks. Cody Kendall threw the final three and two-thirds for the save.

Fresno State designated hitter Kenny Wise opened the scoring with a two-out solo homer in the top of the second to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 edge.

In the fourth, the visitors added to their lead on another two-out solo shot, this one from Jordan Ribera, already his sixth of the year.

Fresno State tacked on another in the fifth. Trent Garrison reached on a double when a pop to left dropped between several UW fielders. After two outs, a single from Garrett Weber drove him in to make it a 3-0 score.

Washington finally broke through for a run in the fifth. After loading the bases with three walks, Max Kwan scored from third on a fielder's choice grounder from Doug Cherry. However, the Bulldogs avoided any further damage when a hard hit ground ball from Caleb Brown was right at the shortstop and converted for an inning-ending double play.

Junior first baseman Troy Scott had two hits to lead the Huskies.

Next up for the Huskies' is a pair of non-conference games at Oregon Tuesday (5:00 p.m.) and Wednesday (2:00 p.m.). Tuesday's game will air live on television on Comcast SportsNet (channel 179 on most area Comcast cable outlets). Next weekend, the Dawgs travel to Long Beach State for a three-game series.
