Brown & Mitsui Homer In 8-7 Loss At Irvine
Feb. 25, 2012
IRVINE, Calif. - The Washington baseball team got an eighth-inning, three-run homer from freshman Trevor Mitsui to claw back to within one run, but couldn't complete a comeback as the Huskies fell to UC Irvine, 8-7, Saturday at Anteater Ballpark.
The game had been tied at 4-4 before a three-run triple from UC Irvine's Connor Spink broke the tie and keyed a four-run inning for the Anteaters.
Washington (3-3) had overcome an earlier deficit to lead 4-2 at one point, but the Anteaters (4-2) scored single runs in the fifth and sixth before notching four in the seventh to move in front. The three-game series is now even at one win apiece as the Huskies won, 3-0, on Friday.
With the score tied at 4-4 entering the bottom of the seventh, UCI loaded the bases on a pair of walks (one of them intentional) and a hit batter before Spencer came through with his triple to clear the bases. Irvine added a fourth run in the inning when Dillon Moyer doubled to drive in pinch runner Justin Castro.
In the eighth, Robert Pehl walked and Michael Camporeale singled to set the table for Mitsui, a first baseman from Shorewood High, who belted his first college homer to left-center to draw the Huskies within a run.
Husky reliever Mac Acker (1-1), who entered the game to begin the seventh, suffered the loss while UC Irvine's Nick Hoover (1-0) worked one inning for the victory.
UW senior right fielder Caleb Brown did much of the offensive work for the Huskies, finishing 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI in his first start of the year. Mitsui finished 2-for-4 with three RBI while Pehl and Jayce Ray added two hits each.
UC Irvine broke through for the first runs of the game in the bottom of the third as D.J. Crumlich led off with a doubled, took third on a balk and scored on a Christian Ramirez sacrifice fly. Jordon Fox followed with a triple and then scored on a Tommy Reyes flyout, giving the Anteaters a 2-0 lead.
Irvine starter Andrew Thurman had retired the first nine Huskies in order before Ray led off the fourth with a triple to right-center. On the next pitch, Brown tied the game with a home run to right field.
The fourth-inning rally continued as DH Branden Berry walked and then scored from first on a two-out double from Pehl, giving the Huskies a 3-2 lead.
In the fifth, the UW added another. With two outs and none on, Ray legged out a double and then scored on a Brown single, making it a 4-2 Husky lead.
UC Irvine got a run back in the fifth, but might have had more. The Anteaters loaded the bases on a walk, a single and and error and then scored on a double-play groundout, but could only cut the Huskies lead to 4-3.
However, in the sixth, the Anteaters drew even as Scott Gottschling, who reached on a fielders' choice, stole second and scored on a two-out, pinch-hit single from Ryan Cooper, tying it at 4-4.
The Huskies and Anteaters close out the series with 1:00 p.m. game Sunday.
