February 21, 1999

Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The 23rd-ranked Washington baseball team commited four errors and walked nine Cal State Northridge batters Sunday in a 12-9 loss to the Matadors at Matador Field. With the win, CSUN won the series, two games to one.

Reliever Bryan Williamson (0-1), who entered the game with a slim 8-7 lead, took the loss for the Huskies, who dropped to 4-2 on the season. CSUN reliever Andrew Sanchez (2-1) worked three and two-thirds innings of relief to earn the win. Northridge improved to 10-9.

After Cal State Northridge scored four runs in the second to take a 5-0 lead, the Huskies got back into the game in the third inning. Ed Ericksons single drove in Greg Brooks with the first run before third baseman Kevin Ticen hit a three-run homer to make it 5-4.

The fourth inning followed the same pattern as Matt Hollod singled home Brooks before Dominic Woody launched a three-run homer to make it 8-4. The home run was the fifth of the first six games of the year for Woody, a junior catcher from Richland, Wash.

CSUN scored two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to tie the score at 8-8 before Jason Gorman belted a three-run homer off of Williamson in the sixth to give the Matadors an 11-8 lead. A single, a walk, a passed ball and an error led to a 12th Northridge run later that inning.

In the top of the ninth with the bases loaded, UW sophomore Tyson Boston nearly tied the game at 12-12, but his fly ball to right was caught at the wall by Mike Bumstead, allowing only one run to score.

Woody finished the series having batted 8-for-12 with eight RBI and three home runs in the series. Both Gorman and Matt Synhorst had a double and a homer to lead the Matador offense Sunday.

Next Thursday through Sunday, the Huskies travel to Las Vegas to play in the UNLV/Coors Desert Classic. Washington will face UNLV, Nevada, Creighton (twice) and Clemson.
