Bulldogs Nip Huskies, 3-1, To Take Series
Feb. 22, 2009
FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State used a solid start from sophomore Jake Floethe to beat Washington, 3-1, Sunday at Beiden Field. The Bulldogs won the season-opening series, two games to one.
Floethe, a right-hander, worked six shutout innings, holding the Huskies scoreless on five hits and five strikeouts. He didn't figure in the decision as reliever Taylor Garrison, the only Fresno State pitcher to allow a run, got the win in relief. Derek Benny earned the save.
Washington dropped to 1-2 while the Bulldogs, the defending NCAA champs, improved to 2-1.
The Bulldogs notched the game's first run in the second inning. Steve Detwiler singled to lead off. After taking third on a Danny Grubb double, he gave the home team a 1-0 edge, scoring on a groundout from Brennan Gowens.
After a few chances to draw even, the Huskies finally broke through for a first run off of Garrison in the seventh. Julien Pollard doubled and then moved to third on an interference call on a pickoff attempt. He scored on a sacrifice fly from Brendan Gardner-Young.
However, Fresno State grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the seventh. After Isacc Vivas reached on an error and moved to third on a one-out double from Gavin Hedstrom, Tom Mendonca singled to drive in a pair, giving the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead.
Husky starter Jason Erickson, thanks to an early-season pitch count, worked only three innings, allowing the run on four hits and a walk.
Next up for the Huskies is a trip to the Metrodome in Minneapolis for the Dairy Queen Classic. The UW will take on host Minnesota, Hawai'i and UC Santa Barbara next Friday through Sunday. Live audio broadcasts of all three games will be available
