Baseball Improves to 4-0 with Win at Northridge
February 19, 1999 NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Preseason All-America Jeff Heaverlo worked seven shutout innings to lead the 23rd-ranked Washington baseball team to a 10-1 win over Cal State Northridge Friday at Matador Field. The win improved the Huskies' record to 4-0 on the season. Heaverlo (1-0), a junior from Ephrata, Wash., allowed only two hits (both singles), struck out eight and didn't allow a runner to reach third base before being relieved by Randy Vanderplow at the start of the eighth inning. CSUN entered the game averaging 8.3 runs and 10.6 hits per game. UW catcher Dominic Woody went 4-for-4 with a homer and four RBI to lead the offense. Sophomore second baseman Marc Rittenhouse added three singles, two runs and an RBI. After holding Northridge hitless through the first four innings, Heaverlo finally gave up his first hit when Eric Horvat led off the fifth inning with single, reaching first on a slow chopper in the infield. The Huskies got on the scoreboard in the second inning when Pete Orgill walked and scored on third baseman Kevin Ticen's two-run homer to left. The homer was Ticen's second of the season. In the third inning, the Huskies increased their lead to 5-0 on one-run singles from Bryan Williamson, Woody and Orgill. After three more runs in the sixth, Woody hit a two-run homer to center field in the eighth inning to make it 10-0. It was Woody's third four-bagger of 1999. Northridge scored its lone run in the bottom of the ninth off of freshman reliever Shawn Kohn when Jason Watkins' single scored Mike Bumstead. Senior left fielder Nick Stefonick, who went 1-for-4 at the plate, inched closer to the UW hitting streak record by extending his string to 20 games, dating back to last season. The record of 22 games was set in 1997 by Kevin Miller. CSUN starter Tim Bell (2-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on 10 hits in four and two- thirds innings. The Matadors slipped to 8-9 with the loss. The Huskies and Matadors continue the three-game series with 1:00 p.m. games Saturday and Sunday.
