Stefonick Homers Twice in Win over BYU

February 13, 1999

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Nick Stefonick, whose ninth-inning home run lifted the Washington baseball team to a win over Southern Utah on Friday, hit two more homers Saturday as the Huskies beat Brigham Young, 8-7, at the Dixie Tournament at Hurst Field.

Stefonick, a senior left fielder, homered in his first two at bats, giving him round-trippers in three straight trips to the plate over the course of two games. With the victory, the Huskies completed their season- opening weekend with a 3-0 record. The Cougars fell to 4-3 with the loss.

After BYU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homer by Chris Circuit, the Huskies responded with three in the bottom of the inning. Marc Rittenhouse led off with a single and scored on Stefonicks two-run homer. After an out, Ed Erickson made it 3-2 with his second homer of the season. Stefonicks solo home run in the third gave the UW a 4-2 lead.

Jeff Carlsen, who worked five innings and allowed two earned runs, earned the victory. Closer Matt Massingale, who came in with the tying run at second base in the seventh and got a double play, picked up his second save of the weekend. BYU starter Jordan Opdahl (1-1) worked four innings in the loss.

Stefonick, who finished the day 4-for-4 with three runs and five RBI, extended his hitting streak to 19 games, dating back to last season. The school record is 22 games, set by Kevin Miller in 1997. Stefonick was named the most valuable player of the tournament.

Chris Circuit went 2-for-2 with a homer and three RBI for Brigham Young.

The Huskies hit the road again next weekend when they play a three-game series at Cal State Northridge.
