2012 UW Baseball Preview, Part I: Pitchers

Washington's '12 pitchings staff is deep and talented.

PERSONAL: Born in Twin Falls, Idaho ... son of Marci and John Coats ... has an older sister, Heather ... cousin, Keri Coats, played volleyball at Oklahoma ... majoring in history and would like to go into physical therapy.

WASHINGTON:
2013: Pitched two-thirds of an inning in the second game of the UC Davis series ... retired both batters ... pitched the final two innings Feb. 23 (game one) at Lamar, allowing no runs, one hit, one run and striking out two ... made appearances in two of the games at LSU ... retired the only batter he face March 8 vs. the Tigers and then went two-thirds of an inning the next day, allowing only a hit ... pitched in all three games at UCLA, totaling two innings, allowing no runs on one hit with two strikeouts ... pitched a third of an inning March 19 vs. Portland ... retired the one batter he faced March 30 at No. 12 Oregon ... pitched one-third of an inning in the win at SeattleU on April 2 ... struck out one and retired both batters he faced in an outing April 8 at Cal State Northridge ... pitched one and one-third hitless innings in relief April 24 at Gonzaga ... pitched the final inning of the April 27 game vs. Cal.

2012: After having recovered from elbow surgery that was performed prior to coming to UW, pitched in one game during the 2012 season ... worked two-thirds of an innings without allowing a hit or a run March 25 vs. CSU Bakersfield ... pitched for the Bellingham (Wash.) Bells over the summer.

EVERETT COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Transferred to Everett (Wash.) CC prior to the 2011 season, but sat out after elbow surgery ... returned in time for some brief action with the Bellingham (Wash.) Bells during the summer of 2011.

COLLEGE OF IDAHO: Played one season (2010) at the College of Idaho, under coach Shawn Humberger ... helped lead Coyotes to the NAIA World Series ... went 5-3 with a 3.34 earned run average over 13 starts as a freshman in 2010 ... pitched 72.2 innings, allowing 69 hits.

TWIN FALLS HIGH SCHOOL: Earned four letters under coach Tim Stadelmeir at Twin Falls High ... team captain as a senior in 2009 ... named the Gatorade State Player of the Year in 2009, when he was also the Louisville Slugger Player of the Year ... helped the team win its league title in all four seasons and won the district championship in each of the last three .... went 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA and 86 strikeouts over 56 innings as a senior ... also hit .432 with four homers and 24 RBI as a senior in 2009 ... also earned two letters in football.
