SEATTLE - The familiar setting of Lincoln Park on the edge of Puget Sound in West Seattle once again welcomes thousands of distance runners and spectators this Saturday, Sept. 15, for the firing of the opening gun of the 2012 Washington cross country season. The Huskies have high expectations for the fall, which will begin to take shape as they host the 21st annual Sundodger Invitational.

The busy schedule features beginning high school runners on one end of the experience level up to D-I college athletes. The eight-race slate begins at 9 a.m. with the women's college open 6,000-meters and is followed by the open men's 8,000-meters. After the high school varsity girls 5k at 10:25, the Washington women's team, ranked No. 1 in the nation, will compete at 11 a.m. Shortly thereafter, at 11:35, the Husky men will race for 8k. The boys varsity high school race follows and the two junior varsity high school races close things out.

Head Coach Greg Metcalf expects most of his top returning men's runners will be on the starting line on Saturday, although the women's team will largely be comprised of athletes looking to crack the second group of five or newcomers just out to run strong in their collegiate debuts. The six returning Huskies from last year's NCAA runner-up squad most likely will not be in action on Saturday, but they will be on hand to cheer on the squad to a potential sixth-straight Sundodger title.

Competition for the invitational collegiate races includes out-of-towners from Fresno State, Portland State, Idaho, Eastern Washington and Western Oregon. Seattle U. will also be in action along with visitors from Canada such as Simon Fraser and UBC and several other local small colleges.

Go Huskies!
