MONCTON, N.B., Canada - With a personal-best, and UW freshman record, throw of 244 feet and 10 inches, Washington's Joe Zimmerman took fifth place in the men's javelin at the IAAF World Junior Championships Friday in Moncton, Canada.

Zimmerman, who finished fourth at the NCAA Championships this past spring, beat his previous personal best of 238-4, which he recorded at the U.S. Juniors this year.

German Till Wöschler earned the IAAF Junior title with a 270-9, a meet record.

Zimmerman was one of 12 throwers to advance from the preliminary round, where his mark of 230 feet was seventh best of that round.

Friday, he set his personal best in his fifth of six attempts. His 244-10 mark ranks No. 3 in Husky history, trailing only current teammate Kyle Nielsen (247-1 in 2010) and Darryl Roberson's school-record throw of 249-6, set back in 1986.

Zimmerman won the Washington state 4A title as a senior at Spokane's Lewis & Clark High School in 2009.

Go Huskies!
