Cameron Named Gohuskies.com Student-Athlete Of The Week
March 7, 2011
SEATTLE - Men's track and field star James Cameron was named the Gohuskies.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 28-March 6. This is the first such honor for Cameron on the year and the second ford the men's track and field team.
Cameron, a sophomore from Lake Forest, Calif., achieved one of the most famous marks in track and field, breaking the four-minute mile barrier to earn a spot at nationals.
The Dempsey facility has turned out dozens of four-minute miles over the past several years, but only two UW men had ever reached that mark before. Eric Garner posted a 3:58.93 in 2002 and Austin Abbott had a 3:58.23 in 2007 and 2009.
Cameron moved steadily up the pack that included four Huskies, until he was second heading into the bell lap. Cameron kicked for home and crossed in 3:58.51, the second-fastest mile in Husky history behind only Abbott.
His time was well under the NCAA Auto mark of 3:59.00 needed to advance to College Station, Texas for next week's national meet. Cameron has also posted top-five times in the 3,000-meters (8:00.17) and the 5,000-meters (13:54.77) this season indoors.
Other nominees include: Austin Voth (baseball), C.J. Wilcox (men's basketball), Chris Williams (men's golf), Jeevan Nedunchezhivan (men's tennis), Katie Flood (women's track and field), Kristi Kingma (women's basketball), Anya Alvarez (women's golf), Samantha Walior (gymnastics), Jenn Salling (softball) and Denise Dy (women's tennis).
