Huskies Compete at Pac 10 Decathlon Competition
May 16, 1998 PALO ALTO, Calif. - Defending champion Ross Bomben from California is in second place while last year's runner-up Dominic Johnson of Arizona took the first-day lead Saturday in the Pacific-10 Conference decathlon championship at Stanford's Cobb Track & Angell Field.
Johnson, who also held the first-day lead last year, has a first-place total of 3,317 points entering Sunday's final five events. Bomben is second with 3,206 points followed by Arizona's Klaus Ambrosch with 3,093.
Washington junior Mike MacPherson, making his Pac-10 decathlon debut, is in sixth place with 2,684 points. The Sehome High School product placed third in the high jump (6-4 3/4) and fourth in the 400 meters (53.17) and registered a career-best shot put mark of 36-11 1/2.
Husky sophomore E.J. Iddings, who finished sixth last season, is in eighth place with a 2,507-point total. A graduate of Tahoma High School, Iddings posted a sixth-place long jump effort with a career-best leap of 20-4 1/2.
