May 16, 1998

SEATTLE -- Junior Keisha Griffis broke the Washington school record in the women's 400-meter race Saturday at the Seattle Pacific Invitational in Husky Stadium.

Griffis' winning time of 54.44 eclipsed the previous standard of 54.45 established in 1996 by current Husky assistant coach Patrice Turner. Griffis also won the 200-meter race in 24.50.

Two other Washington women were double-event winners; junior Michele Reid won the long jump (18-4 3/4) and triple jump (40-2 1/4) while sophomore Sesilia Thomas won the shot put (44-3 1/4) and discus (137-2).

Seattle Pacific University's Joleen Schwarzmiller won the 100 meters in an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time. Schwarzmiller won her eighth sprint race in 11 outings this season and was clocked in 12.14 seconds, the No. 3 time in school history.

The Falcons, behind Schwarzmillers strong anchor leg, also won the womens 4 x 400 relay, improving their provisional qualifying time at 3:46.79.

Saturday's meet was the final tune-up for the Washington track teams before they compete at the Pacific-10 Conference championships May 23-24 at Stanford.
