May 10, 2003
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - While their UW teammates closed out the regular season at Saturday's Ken Foreman Invitational track and field meet, Huskies Kendra Caprye and Nick Verbon got a head start on the 2003 postseason, completing one day of competition in the heptathlon and decathlon events at the 2003 Pac-10 Multi-Events Championships at the USC's Katherine B. Locker Stadium and Cromwell Field in Los Angeles.
With four events completed in the seven-event heptathlon, Caprye sits ninth with 2,488 points. The sophomore from Spokane, Wash., opened the competition with a personal-best time of 16.80 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, and cleared 5 feet, 2 ½ inches in the high jump. Marks of 33-9 ¼ in the shot put and 28.44 in the 200 meters rounded out Caprye's effort Saturday. The heptathlon concludes Sunday with many of Caprye's strongest events, including the long jump, triple jump and javelin.
Defending Pac-10 champion Ellanee Richardson of Washington State held the Day One lead with 3,430 points, followed by Cougars teammate Diana Pickler at 3,270.
Meanwhile, freshman Verbon made his Pac-10 Championships debut in the decathlon, ranking 11th after five events with 3,142 points. Washington State freshman Darrion Powell was first at 3,945, while Shelton Davis of USC finished Day One second with 3,890.
Verbon kicked off Washington's postseason effort with a UW-best time of 11.50 to place ninth in the 100-meter dash, matching his placing with a 21-foot, 2-inch effort in the long jump. An 11th-place finish in the shot put, at 32-3, and a similar placing in the high jump, at 5-8 ½, soon followed, with Verbon closing the first day of competition with a time of 53.72 seconds in the 400 meters, earning 10th.
The decathlon will feature five more events on Sunday, including the 110-meter hurdles, the discus, the pole vault, the javelin and 1,500-meter run.
