SEATTLE -- Freshman Ja'Warren Hooker broke the Washington school 100-meter dash record and sophomore Ben Lindsey nearly eclipsed the school shot put standard Saturday, helping the Huskies win a three-team track & field meet at Husky Stadium.
Hooker, a product of Ellensburg (Wash.) High School, raced to a winning time of 10.18 seconds to easily beat the runner-up mark of 10.62 by teammate Willem Ryan. He shaved .08 seconds off the school record of 10.26 established by Pablo Franco in 1975. Hooker's previous best collegiate clocking was 10.28.
"I'm happy with the time, but I feel like I could've run better," Hooker said. "I don't want to put any limitations on what I have done or can do. I still have room for improvement."
Hooker, who won the NCAA Indoor 55-meter title, secured a trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships by reaching the automatic qualifying standard.
Lindsey added a remarkable two feet to his career-best, launching the shot 65 feet, 4 inches. That mark is an automatic NCAA qualifier and the second-best performance this year by a collegian. The Lynnwood (Wash.) High School graduate came within seven inches of the school record of 65-11 set in 1979 by Steve Summers. Lindsey also registered a winning discus heave of 186-1.
Washington senior Aretha Hill topped the 200-foot barrier for the third time, winning the women's discus with a mark of 200-11. The Renton (Wash.) High School product leads the nation with an American Collegiate Record of 215-3. Hill also won the shot put with a mark of 50-7 1/4.
Colorado's Kelly Smith was the only other double-event winner, claiming titles in the women's 800- (2:11.61) and 1,500-meter (4:20.37) races.
The Washington women won dual meets with both Colorado (88-57) and Idaho (108-45). The Husky men also outpointed Colorado (85-75) and Idaho (94-69). The Buffaloes won dual meets against Idaho in men's (90-67) and women's (94-55) competition.
The Huskies compete at Husky Stadium again next Saturday, hosting their annual dual-meet with Oregon beginning at 10 a.m.
