Washington's Hill Upset at Penn Relays
April 23, 1998
PHILADELPHIA -- Washington senior Aretha Hill was defeated in a discus competition Thursday for the first time this season, spoiling her bid for a third consecutive Penn Relays championship at Franklin Field. Hill registered a second-place performance of 178-feet, 2-inches, her shortest throw of the year by nearly 20 feet. Roberta Collins of Kent State upset Hill, winning the Penn discus title with a mark of 181-8. A product of Renton (Wash.) High School, Hill had won her first six discus competitions of the 1998 season. She captured the last two Penn Relay championships, including a meet-record throw of 189-6 in 1996. Hill was the lone Washington track & field competitor at the prestigious Penn Relays. She attempts to start up another discus winning streak this weekend, joining the rest of the team in Des Moines, Iowa at the Drake Relays on Friday and Saturday.
