FRESNO, Calif. -- Senior Aretha Hill broke her own school discus record while sophomore Ben Lindsey neared the mens shot put mark and both reached NCAA automatic track & field qualifying standards Saturday at the Fresno Quad Meet.
Hill, product of Renton (Wash.) High School, heaved the discus 199-feet, 4-inches to win by over 45 feet. She eclipsed her own school record of 196-7 established last season. Hill also won the shot put with a personal best mark of 51-5 that reached the NCAA provisional qualifying standard.
A graduate of Lynnwood (Wash.) High School, Lindsey was the premier freshman thrower in the nation last year, earning All-America acclaim in the discus. Steve Summers set the Husky record of 65-11 in 1979. Lindsey also won the discus, adding over five feet to his career-best performance with an NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 192-9.
Freshman sprint sensation Ja'Warren Hooker made his collegiate outdoor debut one week after winning the 55-meter title (6.12) at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. Hooker won the 100-meter race in 10.60 seconds. Fresno States Mike Ward was second with a time of 10.70.
The Huskies captured the women's team competition, winning 11 of 19 events en route to a 227-point total. Host Fresno State placed second with 211 points followed by South Dakota State with 81 and San Francisco State with 59.
Junior Keisha Griffis joined Hill as a Washington double-event winner, outracing the fields in the 100-meter hurdles (14.19) and 400-meter hurdles (1:01.60).
