LOS ANGELES - The Husky track athletes who had to show the most patience during the indoor season, the javelin group, fittingly got the chance to open up the outdoor season tonight at the Trojan Invitational at USC's Loker Stadium. The group showed all the promise expected of it, as the Husky men finished in four of the top five spots, and the two Husky ladies each posted career-bests.
Senior Joe Zimmerman had the best showing of the night, tossing a best of 238-feet which jumps him up to fourth in the NCAA and already certainly will mean an NCAA Prelim qualifier, though that's still a couple months away. It's the best season-opening mark of Zimmerman's career and five feet farther than his best throw in all of 2012.
Sophomore Quinn Hale and senior Jimmy Brookman also had excellent season-opening throws, with Hale taking second at 220-2, and Brookman third at 219-9. Hale's toss is just a couple feet off his personal-best. The two will jump up to 13th and 14th, respectively, in the early national rankings.
Freshman Carson Fuller of Spokane made his collegiate debut and threw a five-foot PR, sending the spear 208-1 on his third attempt of the evening. He moves to 25th nationally and ranks fourth now among freshmen.
Seniors Jordin Seekins and Ally Mueller each got their final years off in the best way possible, with new PRs. Seekins passed the 45-meter mark for the first time ever on her fifth throw, going 45.18, good for 148-feet, 3-inches, and placing fourth overall. That puts her up to 20th nationally and was a PR by just under two feet.
Mueller, the Redmond native, saved her best throw for last, as her sixth attempt was eight feet past any of her first five. She threw 141-4 on that sixth effort, more than four-feet past her old career-best, set back in 2011.
The marks by Seekins and Mueller also improve their own marks in the Husky top-10 list, with Seekins ranking sixth and Mueller eighth.
The rest of the UW squad gets its outdoor season going tomorrow at USC with a long day of action at Loker Stadium.
