The Washington men's and women's crews host their biggest rival California in the annual dual regatta between the West Coast rowing powers. Racing begins Saturday, April 23 at 9 a.m. on the Montlake Cut. Senior Brett Newlin, who helped the Husky men's varsity eight defeat the Golden Bears three times last season, talks about the season so far and this week's much-anticipated dual regatta.
GoHuskies.com: How have things gone so far this season? Brett Newlin: "It's going pretty well. We've tried a couple of different lineups. There's a couple that are working really well right now so we're going to try them this weekend and see how it works out."
BN: "It was a really good way to start the spring season, 3-0. It was really unique because we could get three match races in and base our speed off of other teams."
BN: "It was good to see how we could respond to one other boat in our lane, head-to-head and see how we do."
BN: "Cal is never just another regatta. We're always looking forward to this weekend. We're always anxious and excited to see how much we can beat them by. The rivalry is not fading at all. We want to beat them this year more than ever."
BN: "Usually when Cal is there you have your game face on because you know you're going to race them, but I guess it was, I don't want to say more laid back, but since we weren't racing them, we had our minds on other things. It just built up a little more tension for this weekend. We'll see how it goes." |
