Nov. 10, 2002
SEATTLE - Washington crews won seven of the eight events they entered Sunday, including the men's open eight competition at the annual Head of the Lake Regatta on Lake Washington. The Huskies' varsity eight completed the 4,800-meter course in 15-minutes, 16.83-seconds to win the featured men's race. Oregon State was 28 seconds back with a time of 15:44.96 in the open eight competition. Stanford won the women's main event, beating runner-up Washington by 14 seconds in the open eights. The Cardinal clocked a time of 16:57.80 and UW finished in 17:11.98. Oregon State had a third-place time of 17:14.03. Husky crews were also victorious in both junior varsity eight events. The women finished in 17:50.66 to edge second-place Washington State by two seconds. The UW's JV men were tested only by their understudies, winning with a time of 15:30.56. The Husky "B" team finished in 15:54.15 and Oregon State was third in 16:08.93. The four other winning Washington boats were the women's third varsity eight (19:08.12), the women's open four (19:39.86), the men's third varsity eight (16:19.85) and the men's open four (17:31.95). The Head of the Lake races featured several collegiate competitors from throughout the Northwest along with crews from Michigan State, Texas and UC San Diego. The regatta also showcased numerous junior and masters rowers on its 51-race slate. The format was for "head" races in which boats started from a single-file line at 15-second intervals with the winners determined by time. The course began in the north end of Lake Union, continued through Portage Bay and the Montlake Cut and finished in Union Bay near Washington's Conibear Shellhouse. Sunday's regatta completed Washington's brief fall racing season. The Huskies, who are celebrating their 100th season of rowing, begin the spring season on March 29 with the annual Class Day Regatta.
