BELMONT, Calif. - Washington's top-ranked men's varsity eight and three other crews were victorious Saturday in the seven-race dual regatta against California at Redwood Shores.

The Huskies' defending national champion men's varsity boat extended its winning streak to 14 races against collegiate competition. UW opened a boat-length advantage over the sixth-ranked Golden Bears midway through the race and eventually won by open water. The Huskies completed the 2,000-meter course in 5-minutes, 42.11-seconds followed by Cal in 5:48.71.

The UW men's varsity won back-to-back races in its dual series with the Bears for the first time since they won six straight between 1993-98.

The two West Coast rivals first clashed 105 years ago. UW registered a three-length win over a Cal four-oared crew on June 3, 1903 in Seattle. Washington holds a 68-29-1 advantage in the all-time dual-race series.

On Saturday, the Huskies were also winners in the men's freshman eight, women's second varsity eight and women's varsity four races.

Cal had its five-race winning streak stopped in the men's freshman series that UW leads 51-14. The Huskies crossed the finish line in 5:51.22, six seats ahead of the Bears' runner-up time of 5:53.27. UW and Cal have combined to win seven of the last eight national championships for freshman eights. The Huskies first-year boat won in 2006, 2002 and 2001.

The Bears' second varsity eight crew prevented a Washington sweep of the men's races. Cal's winning time was 5:49.31 and UW finished in 5:52.53.

Both of the nation's top-ranked crews were in action on Redwood Shores as the No. 1 Cal women's varsity eight posted a seven-seat win over No. 15 Washington. The Bears clocked a time of 6:33.51 and UW covered the course in 6:37.55.

The Huskies still own a commanding 22-19 advantage in the dual-race series that dates back to 1977, despite losing the last five meetings.

The women's second varsity race was won by Washington with a time of 6:44.81. Cal was six seats back in 6:47.92.

UW recorded an open-water triumph in the women's varsity four race. The first-place time was 7:27.69 followed by the Bears in 7:38.31.

Cal posted a first-place time of 7:00.44 in the women's novice eight race, just ahead of the Huskies' time of 7:03.13.

The Washington rowing teams return to Seattle next week to host the 22nd-annual Windermere Cup, Saturday, May 3 at 10 a.m. Crews from UW and Navy will compete in the men's and women's featured races. The under-23 national team from Poland will also row in the men's Windermere Cup event and the University of Melbourne from Australia will join the women's field.
