REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - The third-ranked Washington men pulled out wins in the second varsity eight and the freshman eight races, defeating No. 5 Stanford by open water in both. With the win, the freshmen eight remains undefeated on the season. The Husky varsity eight fell to Stanford by just a touch of open water. The Cardinal got out to a lead in the first 500 meters and maintained its lead throughout the race. Washington, sporting a reshuffled lineup, kept pace with the Cardinal, but couldn't make up the difference, falling by less than five seconds. In the second race, the Huskies turned the tables on the Cardinal, defeating Stanford by an almost identical margin. Washington jumped off the line, downing the Card by open water, crossing the finish in 6:10.2, nearly five full seconds ahead of Stanford. The final race of the evening was the freshman eight. The Grunties were already up by open water by the halfway mark and held strong through the last 1000 meters. Washington beat Stanford by several lengths of open water, finishing over 30 seconds ahead of the Cardinal. The Husky freshman crew's time was three seconds faster than Stanford's second varsity eight. The Huskies are back in action Saturday morning as they face defending national champion No. 2 Wisconsin.
