PKs Paramount In Washington’s 1-0 Win At Ohio State
October 12, 2025 | Women's Soccer
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Penalty kicks on both sides of the pitch spelled the difference on Sunday as Washington converted their first half chance and saw Tanner Ijams save No. 22 Ohio State's effort in the waning minutes, preserving a 1-0 Husky win at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The win gives UW four straight and extends the Huskies' undefeated streak to start conference play to eight matches, tying the program record. Washington remains atop the Big Ten table on 20 points.
For the second straight match Kelsey Branson drew the decisive foul in the box for UW, with Lucy Newlin putting home what ended up as the only goal of the match.
The Dawgs doubled up the Buckeyes on shots, putting eight of 12 attempts on goal. Newlin's PK was just the fifth goal of the season conceded by OSU keeper Molly Pritchard and the stout Buckeye defense.
The Huskies started off the match the aggressors, using a high press in the attacking third to cause several turnovers and loose touches, turning into offensive threats.
The Buckeyes were able to keep the Huskies at bay until the final minute of the first half. With 47 ticks left before the break, Branson was taken out from behind inside the 18-yard box. After VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot for a Husky penalty.
Newlin took the ball in the pressure packed moment, perfectly placing her PK inside the left corner to give UW a 1-0 lead after the first 45.
Even while leading, Washington continued to dictate play after the restart, holding the Buckeyes without a second half shot attempt until under four minutes to play.
However, in the 89th minute a VAR review went against the Huskies, awarding a penalty kick to Ohio State. With the win in peril, Ijams dove to her right, pushing Amanda Schlueter's effort that seemed bound for the bottom corner around the woodwork, preserving all three points for the Dawgs.
Ijams finished the match with three saves, securing her third-straight clean sheet and seventh of the season.
Washington returns home for its final two home matches of the regular season, hosting Minnesota Thursday night and Wisconsin Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Stadium. Both matches will air live on the Big Ten Network.
Thursday's affair will be UW's Shut Out Cancer match, while Sunday will serve as Senior Day on Montlake.
