Huskies Sweep Up Ducks In Eugene
October 12, 2025 | Volleyball
EUGENE, Ore. – A couple weeks removed from a run of heartache in tight sets, the Husky volleyball team made the crucial plays late today to win three straight close sets, producing a sweep of the Ducks at Matthew Knight Arena. Washington (8-8, 3-3 Big Ten) got its first conference road win of the season, 27-25, 25-22, 29-27, in front of 2,746 yellow and green faithful.
The Huskies saved set points for Oregon (11-5, 2-4 Big Ten) in both the first and the third sets to win in extra points. A block from Katy Wessels and Alexa Markley on UW's third match point chance in the third finished off the win and erased any Oregon comeback plans. It was Washington's first win in Eugene since the fall of 2021, and first sweep in Eugene since the 2020 season.
In the first set, the Huskies fell behind early by six at 2-8, and after battling back to take a lead at 11-10, Oregon pushed ahead by five again at 17-22. But the Dawgs clawed back with a 3-0 run and then had to save two set points down 22-24, getting one on a Wessels kill and the second on a block by Julia Hunt and Markley. Zoria Heard then aced the Ducks to put the Huskies up, and Simona Mateska converted on UW's second set point.
Set two saw the Huskies in more control from the gun, but Oregon went on a 5-1 run to cut the Husky lead from 17-12 to 18-17. The Ducks got within one point again at 22-21, but Heard delivered another late ace to reach set point at 24-21 and UW took the 2-0 lead.
In the third, a big 4-0 Husky run took them from down 19-21 to up 23-21 punctuated by a massive Mateska kill to force an Oregon timeout. The Ducks tied it at 23-all but UW got to match point first at 24-23. Oregon saved it and then went up, 24-25, forcing UW to take time. Kierstyn Barton tooled the block out of the break for 25-all. UW had another chance to finish but Oregon saved it and retook the lead again, but made two straight attack errors to put the Huskies on the verge for a third time. The block from Wessels and Markley finally ended it, 29-27.
The Huskies hit .243 for the match and held the Ducks to .155. Washington had an edge in blocks, 11.0 to 9.0, while Oregon had a slim edge in kills (44-42) and aces (8-7) with digs even at 38 each.
Barton led the Huskies with 12 kills and hit .286 and was one dig off a double-double with nine. Mateska had 11 kills with two aces and seven digs. Alexa Markley had nine kills and five block assists. Katy Wessels had seven kills, hitting .429, with five blocks, and Julia Hunt also had five blocks. Alexis Haury set out 34 assists with six digs and an ace, and Zoria Heard had 10 digs, three aces, and six assists.
Up Next: The Huskies have a huge homestand next with defending NCAA Champion Penn State coming in for the first time since UW joined the Big Ten, with that match going down on Friday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. One night later, UW faces a 14th-ranked Minnesota squad on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. in a match where Washington will celebrate 20 years since the 2005 NCAA Championship.
