Huskies Suffer First Loss Of Season Against No. 1 Oklahoma
February 11, 2023 | Softball
IRVINE, Calif. – No. 14 Washington dropped a hard-fought contest with No. 1 Oklahoma 5-4 on Saturday night at the Mark Campbell Invitational.
Madison Huskey was electric, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and a home run – responsible for all four runs by Washington. Freshman Ruby Meylan came in and pitched three scoreless innings in relief, allowing only one hit.
Huskey got the Washington (3-1) offense going with a solo home run with two outs in the first to give Washington the 1-0 advantage.
Oklahoma (4-0) answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Washington responded in the third when Huskey once again reached on a single then advanced to second on an error by the left fielder, bringing around Baylee Klingler – who singled a batter earlier.
The Sooners once had an answer, plating two runs for a 5-2 advantage.
The Dawgs didn't give up and found a way to bring runs across in the fourth. With runners on first and second with two outs, Huskey singled that allowed both runs to score after a fielding error by Oklahoma, making it a one run game once again at 5-4.
Meylan came in and shutdown the Sooner offense in the final three frames.
Down to the final three outs, Olivia Johnson led off the seventh with a walk and Sami Reynolds followed with a double, putting runners on second and third with no outs. The Huskies couldn't bring the tying run across.
Up next, the Huskies head up to Los Angeles to face Loyola Marymount on Sunday morning. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. from Smith Field and airing on WCC Network.
