6-Run Third Does In Huskies Who Fall 6-2 To Seattle U
April 26, 2022 | Baseball
The day started on a positive note for the Huskies who headed east across Lake Washington to face Seattle University at Bannerwood Park for an early 4 p.m. game. Runs in the top of the first and top of the second showed momentum, but things went sideways in the third and the Huskies were unable to find that third out before the Redhawks had put six on the board. Neither offense was able to find their groove again as the score remained 6-2 at the end.
TOP OF 1
McKay Barney led off the inning with a chopper single to short. A walk to AJ Guerrero put two on for Johnny Tincher up next. He gave the ball a ride deep down the left field line. The left fielder hauled it in for the out, but both runners were able to move up.
Colby Wallace stepped into the box next and drove a line drive single just beyond the outstretch arm of the third baseman to score Barney from third.
BOTTOM OF 1
Following a leadoff strikeout, the following batter jumped on the first offering from starter Josh Emanuels and singled to shallow right center field. The next batter connected deep to the same part of the field for a double. The runner on first ignored the hold up sign at third and the relay through second baseman Dalton Chandler to Johnny Tincher at home had him dead to rights for out number two. A groundball to Chandler ended the inning.
TOP OF 2
Will Simpson led off the second with a standup double to the left field corner. Simpson would eventually swipe third. With one out Michael Brown earned a walk on a 10-pitch at bat to put runners on the corners. Up next, Dalton Chandler squared to bunt. The ball was above his head, but the catcher was quick to react and fire down to third catching Simpson well off the base. ย Caught in a pickle he finally sprinted home chased from behind and miraculously slid in safe at home for the Huskies second run.
BOTTOM OF 3
Seattle U got things started with a leadoff walk. A high blooper to shallow right field just fell in to put runners on first and second. The next batter drew a full count walk and with that Coach Elliott Cribby brought in RHP Jack Enger to face loaded bases with no outs. ย The batter sent a ball to deep right center for a sacrifice fly to give Seattle U their first run of the game and runners now at first and third. The next batter leaned into an RBI double off the fence in left field that scored the runner on third. ย With runners now on second and third, a wild pitch to the next batter got by Tincher bringing in run number three for Seattle. The next batter hit a sacrifice fly to center field to give Seattle a 4-0 lead. A full count walk was dealt to the next batter and an error at short put two on and prompted another call to the bullpen. LHP Stu Flesland III entered and his first batter sent a seeing-eye ground ball past a diving Chandler at second scoring another. With runners on first and second a massive chopper got over Simpson's head at first to plate another run and leave baserunners on first and third. The inning finally came to an end as a simple ground ball gave Simpson an unassisted put out.
BOTTOM OF 5
A beautiful diving play deep in the hole by Cam Clayton at short was just late to first putting the leadoff batter on with a hit. Coby Morales broke toward short and fielded a ground ball on the run and fired over to first for out number one. With a runner on second, the next batter walked to put two on. Simpson fielded a grounder from the next batter and fired to second for an out, but that was all they could get leaving runners on the corners. A walk would load them up for the next batter who flew out to AJ Guerrero in left field to end the inning.
BOTTOM OF 6
Flesland continued on the mound in the sixth and relied on his reflexes as he snagged a hot line drive from batter number one. RHP Ryan Velazquez came in for Flesland. His first batter hit a ball deep to center that just go away from Barney for a double. A ground out to Clayton at short put a runner on third with two outs, but a strikeout looking finished off the side.
BOTTOM OF 8
RHP Case Matter replaced Velazquez on the mound and struck out the first two batters. The third batter snuck a grounder through the hole between third and short, but the inning soon ended after a fly ball directly to Barney in center.
TOP OF 9
Preston Viltz started things off pinch hitting in the eighth spot. He hit a grounder that kicked off the shortstop putting the leadoff runner aboard. Josh Urps stepped in pinch hitting for Chandler and drew a walk. Barney reached on a fielders choice as the shortstop made the unassisted play at second. ย This put runners on the corners. Karl Koerper pinch hit for Guerrero, but popped out to the shortstop. With Tincher at the plate, Barney took second base on indifference, but Tincher later went down on strikes to end the potential rally.
Josh Emanuels took the loss moving to 1-4 on the season. He gave up 3 runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and four strikeouts.ย
The Huskies now look ahead to Friday as they welcome the Stanford Cardinal to Husky Ballpark for a three game series.
