SAN FRANCISCO -- University of Washington student-athletes Kelsey Plum (women's basketball) and Justin Schmidt (men's soccer) have been selected to receive the Tom Hansen Conference Medal, one of the Pac-12 Conference's most prestigious honors.
Named in honor of the former commissioner, Tom Hansen Conference Medals are awarded annually by each Pac-12 member to the outstanding senior male and female student-athletes who exhibit "the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics, and leadership."
Recipients must be seniors or graduate students who have completed their eligibility. Each school can honor only one male and one female.
Plum will go down as one of the most decorated student-athletes in women's basketball history. The Poway, Calif. native became the all-time leading scorer in NCAA history, finishing her career with 3,527 points. She led the nation in scoring her senior season, averaging 31.7 points per game.
In her historic final year, Plum also broke the NCAA single-season scoring record with 1,109 points and the 33-year-old NCAA career free throw record, finishing with 912.
Sweeping the 2017 national player of the year awards, Plum won the Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy (Atlanta Tip-Off Club), Wade Trophy (WBCA), Ann Meyers Drysdale Award (USBWA) while also being named the Associated Press Player of the Year.
The Pac-12 Player of the Year became the first player in conference history, male or female, to reach 3,000 career points.
Plum led Washington to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including back-to-back trips to the sweet 16 and the program's first final four in 2016. Over the last four seasons, she started in every game (139), leading the Huskies to 98 wins, including a program-record 29 last season.
Plum was also a CoSIDA Academic All-American and a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention honoree.
Joining Lisa Raschkow (1987), Karen Deden (1991), Megan Franza (2001) and Giuliana Mendiola (2004), Plum becomes the fifth recipient in program history.
At the end of his career at Washington, Schmidt totaled 80 appearances in the Purple and Gold, with nine goals and 19 assists. The defender was a four-year starter for the Huskies and a 2016 team captain.
In his final campaign for Washington, Schmidt recorded three goals and had two assists. His three goals contributed to three Husky wins including a 4-0 shutout against UCLA, a 1-0 shutout against 2016 National Champion Stanford and a 4-1 NCAA second round tournament win against New Mexico. He played in 20 games, starting in 19. Schmidt helped the Huskies to a 14-7 record in 2016 and their fourth post season appearance in five seasons.
The native of Albuquerque was a member of the 2013 Pac-12 Championship winning team. That same season they made it to the NCAA quarterfinals.
Schmidt's honors include All-Pac-12 Team (2013, 2015, 2016), NSCAA All-Far West Region Team (2015, 2016), Pac-12 All-Academic Team (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016) and College Soccer News National Team of the Week (Nov. 11, 2016).
In January he was drafted by Real Salt Lake as the No. 35 overall pick.
Schmidt is the program's third recipient. Past winners from men's soccer include C.J. Klaas (2005) and Erik Penner (1995).
