Ken Shannon Wraps Home Track Slate
May 04, 2017 | Track & Field
SEATTLE – The annual Ken Shannon Invitational closes out the Husky home track schedule this weekend, providing a final chance for a number of Dawgs to tune up for the upcoming Pac-12 Championships. Also this weekend, junior Cole Jensen will be getting a head start on Pac-12s as he represents UW at the Pac-12 Multi-Events, held this Saturday and Sunday in Corvallis.
The Ken Shannon meet, honoring Husky Hall of Fame head track coach Ken Shannon, gets going with three field events on Friday afternoon. The women's javelin starts at 1:30 p.m. followed by the men's hammer throw and then the women's hammer throw.
Saturday's first event will be the women's long jump at 10 a.m. with the first running event, the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, starting at 11 a.m.
While the main Pac-12 Championships will take place in Eugene next week, Oregon State is hosting the decathlon and heptathlon championships. Jensen scored a career-best 7,166 points in his most recent decathlon at the Mt. SAC Relays, and he heads into the conference championships ranked fifth in the Pac-12 this season. Jensen was eighth at last year's Pac-12 Multis.
Also this weekend, Husky junior Amy-Eloise Neale will make an advanced trip to Eugene ahead of the upcoming Pac-12 Championships to race the 1,500-meters at the Oregon Twilight meet. Neale will run at 6:52 p.m. Friday night and Pac-12 Networks Oregon will carry that portion of the meet live.
In the women's sprints at the Ken Shannon, the women's 200-meters is shaping up as an event to watch, as senior All-American Kennadi Bouyer is entered for what would be her final home appearance. Senior 400-meter standout Laura Anuakpado will also drop down to 200-meters, with Cydnicia Wade also in the mix. Sarah Stavig and Kate Adler are both entered in the 100-meters, with Adler and Bouyer also scheduled to long jump. At 400-meters, Imani Apostol and Carolyn Birkenfeld will aim for season-bests.
Josephine Bosserman, Grace Hodge, and Micaela Kostecka are slated to run the 1,500-meters.
The full contingent of women's pole vaulters are entered, led by Pac-12 Champions Kristina Owsinski and Elizabeth Quick, looking to fine-tune before they chase the conference title next weekend.
In the throws, school record-holder Onyie Chibuogwu goes in the hammer and discus, with Gina Flint looking to continue her late season comeback in the shot put and discus, and freshman Angel Nkwonta going in the hammer and shot put. Emmy Engle, who just moved to No. 9 on the Husky javelin top-10 with a 146-foot throw last week, looks to build on that in the javelin, along with sophomore Katherine Taylor.
On the men's side, Lucas Strong will have his final home sprints in the 100-meters and on the 4x100m relay. Junior Jacopo Spanò, redshirt freshman Jordan Lucas, freshman Khalil Winfrey, along with Dante Pettis, are all scheduled to run the 100-meters as well. Pettis has only long jumped thus far, and will be long jumping as well on Saturday.
At 200-meters, Ryan Croson runs for the first time since his dramatic anchor leg in the 4x4 win over WSU two weeks ago. Michael Thomas, who also made up the gap on WSU to pass to Croson, also runs at 200-meters, as will freshman Jason Palmer. Junior Eric Simpson will race in the high hurdles once again and freshman Oscar Herrera goes in the 400m hurdles.
In the mid-distances, Connor Morello, Mason Fletcher, and Johnathan Stevens are entered at 800-meters, while Charlie Barringer, Julius Diehr, and Andy Snyder are in the 1,500m.
Blaise Black, Zach Shugart, and Lev Marcus have all cleared 17-0 ¾ in the pole vault this season and all will be jumping on Saturday, along with Jacob Bowler and Joey Weiler.
Some final work in the throws will be done by senior Dan Boyden in the discus in his final home appearance. Kyle White will throw hammer for the final time as well, along with junior Carey Campbell. Freshman Jose Padilla goes in both the shot and discus to round out the throws group.
