No. 8 Washington Makes A 12 Run Comeback To Sweep No. 13 Utah
May 13, 2017 | Softball
"What an amazing game," said Washington head coach Heather Tarr. "This team has built themselves up to conquer any situation the game could possibly put us in. We didn't wake up this morning and think this was how today would go, but the skills we've built up to this point allowed us to figure out a way to get back in the game, stay in the game defensively, get close, stay close, tie the game and then ultimately win the game."
The Husky offense combined for twelve hits on the day, all but one getting knocked in during the final four innings.
Ali Aguilar pounded her 10th home run of the season off the first pitch from Utah's starter, Katie Donovan.
Senior Casey Stangel went 3-for-3 on Saturday, totaling four RBIs.
Taylor Van Zee came up big for the Dawgs, knocking in the game-winning run in the eighth inning and getting the final out of the game at third base.
Washington took an early 1-0 lead when lead-off hitter Aguilar swung at the first pitch and sent the ball over the fence for a solo home run.
Utah's Hannah Flippen answered back in the bottom of the frame with a two run homer to steal the lead.
Flippen hit an RBI triple over Casey Stangel's head in left field for her second RBI of the day. She was plated on a single from Anissa Urtez to extend the lead to 4-1. Two more runs were brought in after Alyssa Barrera hit a bases-clearing double to center field.
In the third inning, Utah extended its lead to 10-1 after an RBI single from BreOnna Castaneda. Flippen then stepped up to the plate and hit a three-run homer to left field, her second of the day.
Two more Utah runs were brought in during the fourth inning, the first off a wild pitch from Kristin Cochran. The final run came on a bases-loaded walk, extending the Utes' lead to 12-1.
Washington put four more runs on the board in the fifth inning after A bases-loaded walk pushed Trysten Melhart home from third. With Aguilar and Kelly Burdick both in scoring position, Stangel hit a two-run single to right field. Morganne Flores then hit a sacrifice fly to right, bringing in Sis Bates, who had previously reached on a fielder's choice.
With the Huskies' four runs scored in the fifth, they avoided ending the game by mercy rule. The Utes led, 12-5, heading into the bottom of the inning and the Husky defense retired the lineup in order to move on to the sixth.
The Husky offense continued to produce, scoring six runs in the sixth inning. Julia DePonte led off with a walk. Trysten Melhart reached first on a fielder's choice and pushed pinch runner, Maggie Gallagher, to second. Kirstyn Thomas also reached on a fielder's choice, moving Melhart to third. Aguilar singled up the middle, plating Melhart and Thomas. Bates then singled to left field moving Aguilar to scoring position. Stangel cleared the bases with a two-run double. She scored on an RBI double from Flores. The final run of the inning came from Van Zee with an RBI single through the left side, sending Flores home.
Washington ended the sixth trailing by only one run, 12-11.
In the seventh inning, Washington stayed alive when Thomas reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a groundout from Burdick. With the tying run in scoring position, Aguilar grounded to second, sending Thomas home.
Washington's defense retired the Utes' lineup in order, forcing the game into extra innings.
Stangel led off with a single to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch from the Utes' third pitcher, Hailey Hillburn. Flores then grounded out, moving Stangel to third. With one out, Van Zee hit a sacrifice fly to right field and brought in Stangel for the game-winning run.
The Utes were unable to catch up to the Huskies' one run lead in the bottom of the eighth, giving Alvelo her 28th win of the season.
"There are so many great things that happened in today's game, said Tarr. "We are building our tools for what's to come, We've faced a bunch of great teams this season and we go into post season waiting for another opportunity to play."
Tomorrow, May 14, Washington will learn its postseason fate at 7 p.m. PT when the NCAA bracket is revealed on ESPN 2 and the WatchESPN app. Details on the regional tournament will be released immediately following the selection show.
