Jones And Scambray Split On Day One At USA Pairs
May 11, 2017 | Beach Volleyball
HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. - In the first day of the inaugural USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships, Husky juniors Tia Scambray and Crissy Jones split their first two matches of the pool play portion. The Huskies will have one more match in pool play on Friday morning as they look to advance into the single elimination round of 16, which starts Friday afternoon.
The 24 invited pairs were separated into six pools of four teams, with the Huskies entered in Pool C. The Huskies were only seeded 22nd out of the 24 teams, but UW has gotten used to ignoring expectations this season. Jones and Scambray faced the No. 3 overall seeds in their first match, Delaney Knudsen and Madalyn Roh, the No. 1 pair from Pepperdine. The Waves just lost in the NCAA Championships final to USC in a 3-2 heartbreaker. The first set this morning was knotted at 20-20, before the Pepperdine duo grabbed the final two points to take it, 22-20. The second set was close as well but Knudsen and Roh clinched it, 21-17.
The Huskies bounced back in their second match of the day against the USC team of Abril Bustamante and Joy Dennis, the 9th-seeded pair. Again the first set went to extra points, but this time the Huskies secured it, 24-22, and they pulled away in set two for the victory, 21-15.
Friday at 8:50 a.m., the Huskies will finish pool play against the UCLA tandem of Yeomans/Justine. The top two pairs in each of the six pools, plus four more third-place teams with the best point ratios, will move on to the round of 16.
