Washington Claims Series At Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. β The No. 8 Huskies (36-10, 10-7 Pac-12) captured the series at California (27-18, 3-13 Pac-12) after defeating the Bears, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in Berkeley.
Casey Stangel pounded her 11th home run of the season after hitting a three-run homer in the sixth inning.
Freshman Samantha Manti (7-1) started in the circle and earned the win. She struck out one and walked only one during her five innings on the mound. Taran Alvelo earned her second save of the season after coming in during the sixth inning.
The Huskies were the first to score Saturday afternoon, starting with back-to-back singles from Kelly Burdick and Ali Aguilar. The two were sent home after Stangel's three-run homer to right field.
The Bears chipped away at Washington's 3-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single, but that was all they were able to put on the board.
The fifth inning brought in one more run for the Huskies, beginning with a single from Burdick, who then stole second. She advanced to third on a flyout from Aguilar and scored on Β a Bates groundout.
California added one more run in the bottom of sixth inning on a home run hit by Annie Aldrete. Alvelo came in after the run as relief and prevented any further damage. The teams left the inning at 4-2, Washington.
The pair will conclude their series on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT at Levine-Fricke Stadium. Washington will return home for a midweek game against Seattle University on Wednesday, May 3 at 6 p.m. PT at Husky Softball Stadium.
