Dawgs Win In First Match At Home Courts
April 22, 2017 | Beach Volleyball
SEATTLE – A typical Seattle spring day with rain on and off did not dampen the spirits of the Husky beach volleyball team or the couple hundred spectators that came out to watch UW get a victory in its first ever match at its new campus home. Washington knocked off Boise State at the Husky Beach Courts, located just north of the Intramural Activities Building off Montlake Ave., with a 5-0 win.
Tomorrow, Washington and Boise State will have a rematch, with the location moving over to Alki Beach in West Seattle. Start time for that match will be 11 a.m.
Head Coach Jonathan Winder was grateful to the executive staff of the athletic department for making today a reality. "It is an incredible thing that Jen, and Erin, and Chip put together these courts to have this event. It was unknown what it would be like, and it turned out great," Winder said. "It was a classic Seattle day and it was a good win for our girls against a good Boise team that has caused a lot of problems for a lot of teams."
Washington (6-5) took a quick 2-0 lead as the No. 4 and No. 5 matches both were put away in straight sets. Shayne McPherson and Melanie Wade defeated Jaymee-Lee Bulda and Laney Hayes at the No. 4 spot, 21-10, 21-15. McPherson closed out the first set with consecutive service aces. Junior Anna Crabtree and sophomore Lindsay Chalmers were winners at No. 5, 21-15, 21-9, over Skye Southwick and Kenna Hanses.
The Nos. 2 and 3 matches both had quick first sets go Washington's way as it looked like UW would keep rolling right along, but the Broncos then fought back to force third sets in both. At the No. 2 spot, Boise State's Roberts/Nobley went up 10-6 in the third set, but Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye came back and tied it at 12-12 on a Julye ace. Julye had a block to get the Huskies to match point at 14-12, and they clinched it two points later, 15-13, to secure the match at 3-0.
At the No. 3 spot, Cassie Strickland and Carly DeHoog had won the first set, 21-14, over Emily Sullivan and Janell Walley, and they then saved three set points in a row to tie the second set at 20-20, but BSU eventually pulled it out, 25-23, to force a third set. The Dawgs then were down two match points at 12-14, but rallied to win the final four points in a row for the 16-14 victory.
"I think Lindsay and Anna did a really good job right away. They played really well against that Boise State team. Then Courtney and Destiny, and Carly and Cassie, both played really well at times, but I think the most impressive thing was just their fight and competitiveness to get back when things weren't going that well," said Winder.
Reigning Pac-12 Pair of the Week Tia Scambray and Crissy Jones then finished up the Husky sweep at the No. 1 spot against Maddy O'Donnell and Maddi Osburn. Jones had several blocks in a big run that broke open the first set, and the Husky pair improved to 9-1 on the year with a 21-13, 21-14 victory.
